Startup Marketing on a Budget: Getting Real Reach Without an Agency Retainer
Published 2026-09-08
A retainer assumes you have ongoing work to fund every month. Most early-stage startups don't — they have specific moments that need visibility (a launch, a funding announcement, a new feature) surrounded by stretches where there's nothing urgent to promote. Paying a fixed monthly fee for that pattern means overpaying in the quiet months to cover the busy ones.
Why campaign-based pricing fits the stage better
Campaign-based pricing flips the retainer model: you pay once, for a defined scope, tied to an actual moment — not a recurring seat or plan. That means budget goes directly toward the launch or announcement that needs it, and there's nothing to cancel or downgrade when things go quiet between campaigns. Cloutso has no subscription tiers at all; every campaign is priced and billed individually.
Two realistic starting budgets
- Launch push, content + distribution. A handful of memes or GIFs ($35–$40 each) plus a 10K–50K reach tier through meme pages (~$217) lands a first campaign well under $500 before any discount.
- Distribution only, if creative already exists. If a founder or in-house designer already made the asset, skip content entirely and pay only for the reach tier — starting around $217 for 10K–50K.
Exact numbers for every tier and format are in the pricing guide.
The startup discount
Eligible startups get 50% off their first paid campaign and 20% off their second, if used within 60 days of the first. That roughly halves the cost of the launch scenario above, which makes it realistic to test a channel before deciding whether to commit more budget to it. Eligibility is straightforward: up to 50 team members, a live product or site (or a launch on the way), and a founder or authorized team member submitting the application. Full terms and the application are on the Startup Program page.
How to sequence it
Apply to the startup program before your first campaign, not after — the discount only applies going forward. Use the discounted first campaign to test a single format and channel rather than everything at once (one content type, one reach tier, one platform), then use the second discounted campaign — within the 60-day window — to double down on whatever performed, or try the other distribution channel. By the third campaign, at full price, you'll know which format and channel is actually worth repeating.
If you're still deciding what to run
Start with Content Campaign vs. Distribution Only to figure out which campaign type matches what you already have, and how meme marketing works if this is your first time running this kind of campaign at all.
